Professor
School of Chinese Medicine – Teaching and Research Division
Professor Li Min joined the School of Chinese Medicine in 2001 and has demonstrated exceptional calibre as a remarkable educator, researcher and practitioner who has been instrumental to the School’s growth. With expertise in the application of Chinese medicines in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). - Professor Li has inspired her students from undergraduate to post-doctoral levels to take an active role to contribute to leading-edge studies in this field.
Over the past decades, Professor Li has established a proven track record as the principal supervisor for 11 post-doctoral research fellows, 16 PhD candidates, two MPhil and 10 taught master’s students, as well as 42 undergraduate students’ honours projects.
Students under her supervision are encouraged to actively participate in collaborative research projects with renowned institutions including the Friedman Brain Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, US, Telethon Institute of Genetics Medicine (TIGEM), Italy and the National University of Singapore.
Professor Li always led her postgraduate students to participate in international conferences to present their research data and establish research collaboration, such as the Keystone Symposia, the Gordon Research Conference, and the International Symposium on Autophagy (ISA). Her PhD students won the best poster awards in the European Molecular Biological Organization (EMBO) International Conference in 2013 and 7th ISA in 2015.
Her students have made ground-breaking findings in various kinds of treatment options for AD and PD, such as the discovery of active compounds, and investigations on the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine formula for treating these degenerative diseases. These studies have been published internationally-recognised, and high-impact journals like Nature Communications, Autophagy, Aging Cell, Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy (STTT).
etc.
Furthermore, her students are no stranger to competitive grants, having secured fundings from the National Natural Science Foundation of China/ Research Grant Council Joint Research Scheme (NSFC/RGC), General Research Fund (GRF), the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) by the HKSAR Government, as well as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), to name a few.
Professor Li also believes in the importance of cultivating good ethics and independent research abilities in the new generation of scholars. Qualities such as honesty, kindness, diligence, teamwork, mutual assistance, and critical thinking have also been the guiding principles in her decorated career.
With her vision to nurture a multicultural and international academic environment, Professor Li has taken pioneering steps in welcoming scholars from different cultural backgrounds, including those from India, to work under her supervision. While Chinese medicine has traditionally been a domain for native scientists, she firmly believes that the exchange of ideas beyond the Chinese community facilitates a broader understanding and acceptance of Chinese medicine worldwide.
Professor Li Min's contributions as an educator, researcher, and practitioner have surpassed all expectations, making her a truly exceptional figure in the field. Her ability to inspire and guide her students to push the boundaries of knowledge in Chinese medicine and neurodegenerative disease research is nothing short of extraordinary. It is undeniable that Professor Li's unwavering commitment to excellence and transformative impact on her students make her unequivocally deserving of the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision.
