Assistant Professor
Department of Education Studies
With his extensive experience as a teacher educator and primary school English-language teacher in Hong Kong, Dr. Moorhouse Benjamin Luke is distinguished by his impressive Course Feedback Questionnaire (CFQ), student comments, and his unique pedagogical approach to teaching. Hailed as a caring teacher who encourages interaction and self-reflection, he has also taken a keen interest in exploring education technologies.
Dr. Moorhouse has a diverse teaching style that is guided by four pedagogies. First and foremost, students thrive under a genuine care for their performance and development. In light of this, he always creates a warm and engaging classroom environment, even in an online setting.
A firm believer that students become more active when they recognise the value of what they are learning, Dr. Moorhouse promotes autonomy and partnership with his students. He provides multiple ways to actively involve them in class activities, as learners are individuals who have different needs and characteristics.
He also encourages reflective practices as means of exploring new ways to engage in the professional practice of teaching. Dr. Moorhouse regularly questions himself and urges his students to do likewise, then seeks data to support the reflections from sources like student feedback, student work, or video-recorded observations.
Finally, Dr. Moorhouse is always looking out for opportunities for his students to learn from their experiences.
The above-average CFQ score in all dimensions of teaching across both undergraduate and postgraduate courses speaks for these pedagogical approaches. For example, students in the Grammar for Teaching course have commended his delivery – that his creative teaching style and teaching methods have made the class very practical and exciting even though it is considered to be a very dull and theoretical subject. Instead of directly imparting the knowledge to students, he encourages them to explore, brainstorm, and develop ideas by themselves.
Especially high ratings were given for his efforts to enhance students’ learning and for being well prepared for class, also for presenting the course in a well-organised manner and providing clear explanations of the topics.
Dr. Moorhouse seeks to enhance the learning experience by various education technologies. He deploys digital noticeboards as a collaborative space for students to share their ideas and task outcomes, and often creates tailor-made teaching materials and activities through game-based platforms.
This approach has also led to his role as a core member of a Virtual Teaching and Learning (VTL) project team to oversee and support the implementation of projects in the Faculty of Social Science. These range from new initiatives involving artificial intelligence (AI), virtual intelligence (VI), and Metaverse, among others.
Dr. Moorhouse has received invitations to give workshops at the Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning (CHTL) and made significant contributions to teaching through Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). He has also published numerous academic papers in high-ranking educational journals.
In recognition of his outstanding performance in various aspects of teaching and his steadfast commitment to student-centred learning, the Selection Committee is in full support of the conferment of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Individual Teaching to Dr. Moorhouse.
