Since joining the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences in 2006, Professor Cheung Mei Kwan Christy has consistently proven herself an asset with exceptional research performance. She has made invaluable contributions to knowledge in the societal implications of the use of information technology by publishing in renowned journals and conferences, while securing local and national grants for her studies. She has been named the world’s top female scientist in the field of information systems.

With Professor Cheung’s conferment as an “RGC Senior Research Fellow” in the inaugural Research Grants Council (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) in 2020/21, a fellowship grant of around HK$7.8 million over a period of 60 months has been secured. In its relation, she is leading an examination in cyber mobbing on social media, which is expected to provide practical insights and advance theory on the prevention and intervention strategies on online deviant behaviors, including cyberbullying.

Moreover, she has served as the Principal Investigator and Co-investigator in over 25 research grants, totaling over HK$12 million, including projects under the General Research Fund, National Natural Science Foundation of China, University Grants Council (UGC) Additional Funding for Teaching and Learning Related Initiatives, etc.

Professor Cheung has shown her capabilities in her impressive track record of scholarly work, having published more than 200 refereed articles in international journals and conference proceedings in the field of Management Information Systems.

The citation count speaks for her momentous academic impact. This is evidenced by a remarkable 25,000 citations and an H-index of 70 according to Google Scholar, and more than 8,000 citations and an i-10 index of 121 in Web of Science (April 2022). In 2020, the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) listed two of her articles as “Hot Paper”, and seven other articles as “Highly Cited Papers”. She is also recognized by the Stanford University, US, to be among the world’s top 2 percent of scholars in citations. In the field of information systems, she ranks 1st among all female scientists, and 29th out of around 18,000 scientists.

Professor Cheung has also won external recognition for her scholarship, like the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence in 2007 and 2016, alongside multiple awards at the International Conference on e-Commerce, e-Administration, e-Society, e-Education, and e-Technology, and the International Conference on Information Systems.

Having been serving since 2016 as the Editor-in-Chief of Internet Research, an information system journal with an impact factor of 6.773 in 2020, Professor Cheung has successfully enhanced its standing in the Academic Journal Guide from Level 2 to Level 3 in 2021.

She has also chaired international conferences and has been invited to give keynote speeches, panel discussions, and seminars all over the world.

With a tireless dedication to mentoring Ph.D. students, she received the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision in 2019.

In recognizing her exemplary efforts in advancing the societal implication of IT, the Selection Committee has no hesitation in conferring on her the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.
