Since he joined the Department of Computer Science in 2001, Prof. Cheung Yiu Ming has emerged as a distinguished scholar in artificial intelligence (AI). His remarkable research have garnered substantial grants from diverse funding bodies, while his active participation in international conferences and esteemed journals has solidified his reputation as a prominent authority in the domain.
Professor Cheung is an eminent figure in the field of computer science with an indisputable scholarly impact within academic circles. He has been ranked the World’s Top 1% Most-cited Scientists in AI and Image Processing by Stanford University since 2019.
With his research interests focusing on machine learning and visual computing, as well as their application domains, Prof. Cheung has consistently secured competitive grants from various funding sources such as the Information and Technology Fund (ITF), the General Research Fund (GRF), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and the NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme. He is also the awardee of Research Grants Council (RGC) Senior Research Fellow in 2023/24.
He has published more than 250 articles in top-tier journals and international conferences, including the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence which is the top journal in the field of AI with an impact factor of 23.6, and the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, just to name a few. Besides, Prof. Cheung is an active contributor to the AI community. He has demonstrated his leadership as the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Community on Intelligent Informatics in 2018-2022, and the Founding Chairman of Hong Kong Chapter of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. Notably, he has been serving as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence, a top-tier journal in the field of Computational Intelligence.
Prof. Cheung is no stranger to awards, all of which reflect his dedication and contributions to the field. They include the 2023 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Asia Pacific Neural Network Society (APNNS), alongside five best paper awards from renowned international conferences and four translational research awards, Furthermore, he has been honoured with esteemed accolades, including the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in Computational Intelligence Society and the distinguished Changjiang Scholars (Chair Professorship) awarded by the Ministry of Education of China.
His international recognition is exemplified by his successful election for fellowships by prestigious professional bodies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the British Computer Society (BCS).
In his public service, Prof. Cheung serves as an Engineering Panel Member for the RGC in Hong Kong and an Assessment Panel Member for the Enterprise Support Scheme (ESS) under the ITF. Additionally, he has been playing a crucial role in nurturing talent as a Selection Panel Member for the Young Scientist Award at the Hong Kong Institute of Science since 2015.
