Assistant Professor, Department of Chinese Language and Literature

As a young academic with a keen professional passion and motivation, Dr. Chen I-Ling explores the transformation of Classical Chinese Fiction and Shang Shu from China to her neighboring countries and clarifies the characteristics of changes that happened in these countries, especially Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. When she encounters topics that arouse her interest, she conducts further research and enriches teaching materials continuously. A prime example is on the application of multimedia teaching materials in the study of the Chinese classics. By adopting a student-based teaching style, Dr. Chen brings to life the textual studies of classical documents that are often considered boring to learners.

An alumnus of the School, Dr. Ku Ping Yui has been highly successful in fostering a vibrant learning environment. In his classroom, Dr. Ku places an unconventional emphasis on the reverse inference of syndrome differentiation, prompting students to deduce pathogenesis and symptoms by first analysing the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulae. To hone their skills in clinical diagnosis, he adopts a problem-based pedagogy which stimulates group discussions using case studies with partially missing information. Dr. Ku also incorporates service-learning components to provide the students with invaluable opportunities to design appropriate recipes, helping to build their confidence in the clinical setting.

Dr. Chan Mau Hing has been a true pioneer who has innovated a variety of experimental pedagogies for the Department’s undergraduate (UG) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes. By embracing information technology, he has delivered different learning experiences to drive deeper student engagement. Specifically, the miniaturisation of experimental tools and the adoption of mobile technology have opened up science exploration beyond the confines of a lab-based setting, thereby creating many new learning opportunities. To enrich the UG students’ experiential learning portfolio, Dr. Chan designed a portable learning resources kits for them to lead outreach programmes for high school students.

An accomplished scholar and educator, Dr. Emily Chow-Quesada has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to fostering engaging and transformative learning experiences for students, particularly in the African cultures and development space. She explored opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom. Riding on her own research interest, she successfully obtained the Service-Learning Mini Grant to bring students to the African diasporic community in Hong Kong via activities related to anglophone African literature. From the student feedback received, her students not only recognised her expertise in African Studies but also were impressed by her attentive and sincere response to their learning needs.

With a reputation as an innovative and effective teacher, Dr. Fung Pui Sze Lucia is an invaluable faculty member of the Department. By leveraging story-telling as a fundamental tool, she has engaged students to navigate the complex issues in business ethics courses. She has also embraced the gamification concept with role-playing scenarios to encourage active learner participation and elevate the learning process. Furthermore, her commitment to authentic assessments is demonstrated through the implementation of projects where students create practical and innovative solutions to real-world business ethics challenges, while also incorporating Harvard Business School's case teaching method into her classes.

Dr. Vincent Huang has grown into a full-fledged educator with his own philosophy in teaching. His ABCD approach, namely Authentic Assessment, Boundary Spanning, Co-Creation, and Digital Mindset, ensures new and innovative teaching methods that enable students to keep up with their studies and achieve significant success. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Huang organises career roundtables and public academic talks that broaden students' horizons, introduce valuable job opportunities, and enhance the positive reputation of the programme. He has led one and participated in two funded projects focused on virtual teaching and learning. These initiatives have opened up exceptional education opportunities beyond regular coursework, resulting in remarkable learning outcomes.

As an educator in scriptwriting and directing of fiction and non-fiction films, Mr. Ying Liang fosters an interactive and immersive learning environment in which he engages the students in a reciprocal exchange of ideas, critiques and assignments. His teaching acumen is demonstrated by the international accolades being bestowed on his student’s work. This included Top 10 Documentary Film Awards at the Urban Nomads Film Week 2022, as well as recognition from the Beijing International Short Film Festival, and the prestigious DMZ International Documentary Festival in South Korea. Mr. Ying has cultivated an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for students to learn not only from him but also from one another.

Professor of Practice, School of Chinese Medicine - Clinical Division

A renowned expert in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) gynaecology, Prof. Zhang Chunling has over 30 years of extensive experience in consultation. As an educator, her teaching approach is dual-focused, placing equal importance on the needs and preferences of the learners as well as the needs and benefits of the patients. She sets up role-playing sessions in class for students to develop empathy and compassion towards patients. This is an essential skill in the clinical setting, especially in the treatment of gynaecological diseases, which is often a lengthy process. Prof. Zhang has been actively participating in the curriculum design, development and revision of courses relating to TCM gynaecology.

Formed by five highly dedicated, caring and student-centred teachers in the Faculty of Social Sciences, the team successfully led and implemented the Virtual Teaching and Learning Pedagogical Development for Interfacing Student Learning and Social Realities project from April 2021 to June 2023. The team adopted a bottom-up design and invited colleagues from a variety of disciplines to enhance teaching and learning through emerging technologies. These include virtual reality, interactive environments, internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy, blended learning and video conferencing, as well as drones. Ten mini-projects were funded and supported, creating real impact on the Faculty’s student learning outcomes and the development of effective teaching practices.

In her young career, Dr. Angela He has demonstrated exceptional promise as a rising scholar in the field of developmental psycholinguistics, unravelling the mechanisms underlying young children’s linguistic and cognitive development. As a fourth-year assistant professor, her impactful work has garnered a Scopus h-index of 6 and the Google Scholar h-index of 9. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with a broad academic network, she demonstrates increasing maturity in her scholarly pursuits. Her recent emphasis on the role of sleep and memory in young children’s language development has attracted funding from the General Research Fund (GRF) and media coverage, driving advancements in the field and making a meaning societal impact.

Dr. LIU Sibo

Assistant Professor, Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance

Dr. Liu Sibo joined the Department in 2021 with expertise in finance, trade and innovation and consistently makes scholarly contributions. He has published in leading business journals and international conferences and has been frequently cited. His works advance several research fields, including shareholder litigation and global value chains, by introducing insights based on innovative empirical strategies, newly constructed datasets, and novel measurements. He has obtained government-funded grants including an Early Career Scheme (ECS) grant as Principal Investigator (PI) in 2019/20 and collaborated on external grants in areas related to firm dynamics and human capital. Additionally, he has established collaborations with industry leaders to address issues in Fintech.

As an emerging young researcher with exceptional acumen, Dr. Lyu Xiaopu has been investigating formation mechanisms of photochemical air pollution. He has authored over 70 influential papers in top-tier journals, including One Earth, Nature Communications and multiple Nature-index journals, garnering 3,000+ citations and an H-index of 29. He has secured competitive grants totaling HKD 6 million from a variety of sources, including CRF (Co-PI), 2 GRF, PPR and NSFC. Moreover, he has been invited to serve as Youth Editor at The Innovation with an IF of 32.1 and organize special issue at a Nature-index journal. Dr. Lyu is a member of the Australia-China Centre for Air Quality Science and Management.

Dr. Peter NELSON

Since joining the Academy four years ago, Dr. Peter Nelson has proven his excellence in research productivity and quality. He has published in reputable peer-reviewed journals, including the Leonardo Journal published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, exhibited creative outputs in internationally leading exhibitions and festivals. In 2022, he was invited by M+ and the Goethe Foundation to give a keynote lecture on computer games and realism at the Game Atlas Conference, and in 2024 was invited by Peking University to give a keynote lecture on his book ‘Computer Games As Landscape Art'. He is a co-principal Investigator of a HKD 2.95 million grant in support of a two-year joint project undertaken in Hong Kong, Spain and Australia.

Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies

Dr. Stephanie Jean Tsang has established an impressive portfolio early in her career. Her achievements include the publication of one edited book, nine book chapters, 20 journal articles, and 45 refereed conference papers, accruing over 670 citations in total. Dr. Tsang has excelled in securing research funding, successfully obtaining three external and nine internal grants, exceeding a total of three million Hong Kong dollars. Additionally, she has served as a reviewer for more than 55 academic journals, demonstrating her dedication to scholarly rigor. Her expertise in misinformation research has attracted significant attention, resulting in over 20 media interviews, both locally and internationally.

Dr. CHANG Song

Associate Professor, Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems

Since joining the Department in 2015, Dr. Chang Song has produced impactful research into human resource management (HRM), firm sustainability and organisational behaviour. His influence in this field is affirmed by his seven peer-reviewed journal articles published in the past three years, driving more than 3,400 citations according to Google Scholar. His co-authored study of the dual-causal relationship between HRM and firm performance secured him 3rd place in the Michael Poole Best Paper Award in the International Journal of Human Resource Management in 2021. In the same year, he was ranked among the top eleven scholars in Chinese HRM research.

Prof. GAO Meng

Professor, Department of Geography

Prof. Gao Meng has emerged as a celebrated scholar for his distinctive accomplishments in the understanding of air pollution in populated regions and its interactions with climate. His research has contributed to more than 120 peer-reviewed papers in top-tier journals such as Science Advances, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Nature Food, and Nature Communications. The impact of his studies is demonstrated by a total citation count of ~6000 and an H-index of 39. Prof. Gao also serves as associate editor of three Q1 journals, namely Science of the Total Environment, Urban Climate and Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society in the UK.

Dr. Angelo LO CONTE

Associate Professor, Academy of Visual Arts

Dr. Angelo Lo Conte has gained international recognition for his pioneering work on historical interconnections between art and disability. His research has resulted in one monograph, 10 peer-reviewed articles published as single author in top-tier international journals, 4 book chapters and 11 refereed conference papers. He has been principal investigator (PI) of one ECS grant, one GRF grant, and of research projects funded by the Australian Government, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Renaissance Society of America. Furthermore, he has delivered keynote lectures in Australia, Switzerland and the United States. His most recent essay, rediscovering the life of a deaf painter working in Renaissance Italy, was awarded the prestigious Renaissance Studies Article Prize 2023.

Associate Professor, Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies

With her multi-faceted talent and creativity, Dr. Janice Pan has consistently excelled in future-shaping research. Over the past triennium, she has championed the Enter-Link with HKBU students, alumni and teachers to provide a community-centric, artificial intelligence-driven language solution that bridges communication gaps within diverse groups. The entrepreneurial start-up has received funding from the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU). She has contributed to over 60 monographs, book chapters and impactful journal articles either as editor, author or co-author. Dr. Pan has also been invited to produce nearly 70 refereed international conference papers and to speak at over 20 seminars in Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, the US and the Chinese Mainland.

With her consistently high-quality research outputs in the field of communication, Dr. Shi has made significant impacts on a global scale. Her portfolio of 32 refereed journal articles has earned a Google Scholar citation count of 1,230 and an H-index of 16. A recipient of the Qi Hao Award for Young Scholars in New Media Research from Tsinghua University, the Top Paper Award from the International Communication Association, and the Promising Professor Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Dr. Shi has been invited to serve as a steering committee member for a project on communicating health risks through social media by the World Health Organization.

Dr. Xavier WONG

Associate Professor, School of Chinese Medicine – Teaching and Research Division

Dr. Xavier Wong has remarkable scholarly achievements, noted by a proven track record in securing external competitive research funding as principal investigator (PI). His work in cell biology and microbiome has led to major breakthroughs in the understanding of cell metabolism and metabolic diseases such as obesity, leading to publications in top-tier journals such as Cell Host & Microbe and Nature Metabolism, which boast respective impact factors of 30.1 and 20.8. Dr. Wong has collaborated with the Karolinska Institute, the Harvard Medical School, Tsinghua University and Fudan University. He won the Excellent Young Scientists Fund under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in 2023.

Prof. Mark SHUTTLEWORTH

Professor, Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies

With his expert supervision spanning a period of more than two decades, Prof. Shuttleworth has guided 13 HKBU students from diverse cultural backgrounds to obtain doctorates. In a move to enrich the level of support provided to research postgraduate (RPg) students, he revamped the policy regarding employing RPg students as teaching assistants. Prof. Shuttleworth guided and oversaw the development of WikiAligner, a research tool with potential international impact developed by a research team led by his PhD student. Finally, he has put forward innovative collaboration models to increase the participation of the Department's RPg students at international conferences and symposia.

Professor, Department of Physics

Prof. So Shu Kong conducts research in flexible electronic materials and devices for green energy applications. He has faithfully lived by his motto in guiding his students with the utmost patience and enabling them to discover their talents. This strategy has been rewarded with astonishing success for the past three decades, with all his 25 students completing their research studies. Currently, there are 3 Hong Kong PhD Fellowship (HKPFS) students under Prof. So’s supervision. An accomplished academic, he ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in 2021 and 2022. Graduates from his research group have become accomplished professionals including technologists, engineers, managers, and academics.

With an unwavering commitment to helping each student discover their own research path, she provides skilful guidance through the various stages of the research journey, from writing proposals to career planning after project completion. She ensures that her students make the most out of their research initiatives and achieve high-reaching learning goals. Accolades won by Prof. Song’s students include the prestigious Chinese Communication Association (CCA) Outstanding Dissertation Award.

Mr. LEE Wing Ki

Associate Professor, Academy of Visual Arts

Mr. Lee Wing Ki has proven himself to be a valuable asset not only to HKBU, but also the education sector and the contemporary arts community. As Acting Director of the Academy, he has overseen the development of robotics and immersive laboratories while leading preparations for flagship events such as Art Basel Hong Kong and the Venice Biennale Project. He has also been instrumental in establishing the School of Creative Arts. Furthermore, Mr. Lee serves on the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. He also provides consultancy services for a variety of non-profit organisations in the professional arts.

Dr. PENG Bo

Associate Professor of Practice, School of Chinese Medicine – Clinical Division

A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) specialist who focuses on respiratory medicine, Dr. Peng Bo is profoundly dedicated to providing quality healthcare services. In his practice, Dr. Peng has demonstrated clinical efficacy by maintaining a high patient volume of more than 3,000 each year. As deputy clinic-in-charge, he has made substantial contributions to the HKBU Chinese Medicine Specialty Centre in Kwai Fong, which has garnered an excellent reputation in the community. He has also led several studies to investigate the effectiveness of Chinese medicine or herbal tea in treating asthma and influenza. These studies promoted the integration of TCM practices with conventional Western medicine.

Dr. Byron SONG

Associate Professor, Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance

Under the restructuring of the School of Business, Dr. Byron Song has successfully implemented the merger of three academic units into the new Department of Accountancy, Economics, and Finance, while maintaining the smooth running of teaching, learning, research, and administrative activities. In addition to his service on university-level committees in finance, honorary degrees and undergraduate admissions, he serves as an external examiner or advisor for other higher education institutes in Hong Kong and Macau. Dr. Song has devoted his expertise to several renowned local and international professional bodies and engaged in editorial work in high-impact international journals such as the Accounting Forum and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics.

Dr. Dominic Yeo has demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to HKBU and the community. As Chair of the Department’s Research and Development Committee in the past four years, he has cultivated a culture of quality research and ethical practices that advances HKBU’s academic reputation. As departmental representative on the Senate, he has contributed to setting guidelines for students on academic integrity. He also serves on the editorial boards of flagship communication journals. Dr. Yeo’s influence beyond academia is showcased by his role as a judge for the David Ogilvy Awards for Excellence in Advertising Research by The Advertising Research Foundation in New York.
